About Christian Science

Why do you call your religion Christian Science?

Mary Baker Eddy answered this question when she stated, “Jesus of Nazareth was the most scientific man that ever trod the globe. He plunged beneath the material surface of things, and found the spiritual cause.”
––Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (p. 313)

The primitive Christianity that Jesus practiced was based on the understanding of God as the one primal cause, and the effect of that understanding was healing. After much searching of the scriptures, Eddy discovered the scientific laws of what Jesus had been teaching and practicing. She named that discovery Christian Science.

Jesus said, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” John 14:12 As Christian Scientists, we take that as a promise that God’s power is still provable in our daily lives through healing.

What is a Christian Science Practitioner?

A Christian Science practitioner is an individual who devotes his or her full time to the practice of healing through prayer according to the teachings of Christian Science. You can contact a practitioner via phone or email with questions or for treatment–or you can have an in-person consultation. The purpose of the practice is to help individuals grow in their understanding of God. You can find the link to a directory of Journal-listed practitioners on our Link page.

What is the difference between Christian Science and Scientology?

There is no relationship between the two. Christian Science is based on the Bible and the teachings of Christ Jesus. In fact, one of our tenets states, “…we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.”
